Tropical tree....progression....

Hi IBC friends,

Happy New Year to all...and many more bonsai to come....
Just want to post one of my collection (Pemphis)...


...this is how my pemphis looks like when i bought it, a year ago...weak and with almost yellow foliage....

... a different angle...on it's side...

...after feeding and caring for it for a month...its leaves now had green color...it became happy...

...did a little workshop...

...left it for three months and went wild and even became stronger...

..finally wired it...and almost 70-80% of its foliage aside from its unwanted branches were removed...

....one month after wiring...

...2 months after wiring....

.....3 months after wiring...

...5 months...


...and now this is how it looks today...it may take more time for it to mature and to thicken its foliage and branches...but I'm happy with what I have....

We can't work trees that way in "temperate" parts of the world, but it's a real pleasure to see what you people can do in countries that must be infected with mosquitoes the size of our eagles.

Here we have Mosquito Lagoon. The legend is that a fisherman is attacked by two mosquitoes, one mosquito says to the other, Should we drain his blood here or carry him home. The first mosquito replies, we better drain him here, if we take him home the bigger mosquitoes will take him away from us.

Second story, this one true, took a Yankee fishing in the lagoon, he showed up in a T shirt, shorts and sandals, I was dressed in a long sleeved shirt, long pants and real shoes. He spent the day in the water to get away from the mosquitoes, I spent the day fishing.

Although I have seen some mean mosquitoes in Alaska and even Southern California.

Good day..Thanks for your comments....Yeah, you are right, we have a lot of mosquitoes here, but not the size of an eagle, hehehe...
We have some mosquito lotion repellents and some weird stuffs, we call it locally as "katol", to drive away mosquitoes...

Is this species collected where your at

I'm from the tropics (Philippines) my friend, these trees are collected along the coastlines and rugged terrains, it used to be abundant until some
unresponsible greedy hunters have trimmed them down until it became nearly extinct, and that forced local officials to totally ban
the hunting of Phemphis around the country...If they(hunters) only got what they need, this specie would have been abundant as before.
This specie is one of the best material in making bonsai...

Would there be any way to get seed from you or anywhere I have a lot to trade

My friend, these tree is approximately 80-100 years in the wild, it could be possible that we can grow them in seedling but you cant grow them on your desired size...how i wish i can send them to you...and besides I think that it can't thrive in your country...

Im in south Florida zone 10, its pretty tropical here.

my friend, I understand your passion in owning one of these trees but I think it's hard for it to grow from seed.. .and I dont recommend you wasting your time in growing its seed..all that we do is hunt them and turn them into bonsai and growing from seed is a no-no..

Phemphis is being grown in Florida from cuttings, but it will take a while to establish a stock for sale.

With only one trunk, the tree is more lisible.

Pemphis will not live in Florida. This is a totally tropical species. Leaf loss during the winter months (even wi protection) is a recurrent problem. When the tree finally recovers, another winter sets in, weakening it further.

Another thing, they need a constant flow of wind.

Well, i imagine they will be three hundred years ol before they grow believable stock . Let's just say this, they live in Florida, but they don't thrive. There's a big difference. My specimen trees live now in Puerto Rico where they are happy

You are right. Phempis acidula cannot be treated just like any other tropical trees, they need special care and cares suited only or exclusively for Phempis acidula. Even some seasoned bonsai growers here in Asia find it difficult to maintain and keep this species healthy.
If Phempis lost its leaves totally....It's dead.
But the outcome of the challenge is very rewarding if ones managed to tame this wonderful species.
