different sort of suiban

Looking to see what other's think. It's not typical but then sometimes I like to offer something different to the viewers. Most of the displays i see involve daizas. This is wooden, yet has a removeable copper liner...thoughts?where do you think the stone should be placed within...it is presently centered and back

Nice playing around
To study a stone i can imagine the setting but as a display
it is unconvincing for me.
In this wood tray the stone is to much captivated,
to much wood and also the sand level should be raised.
A lower suiban wood work stronger but i think i prefer here a jitta.
I would place it a bit more forward to get some space (not in the middle), a setting in the center can be a statement but because of the movement of the stone i would go for a bit to the left.
Then because of the same movement of the stone i would like to try a placement to the right as well.

The wood suiban is lovely...that being said, it fights for attention with the stone which seems overwhelmed. Perhaps as Sunip suggested, a different placement and the stone should be settled into the sand as deeply as possible. A tan colored sand would also blend better with the suiban and should be almost to the top of the rim.

Has David De Groot held any suiseki workshops in your area? He is an expert and probably has a lot of information on this subject of display.

I like the stone. Do you call it a waterfall?

thanks for your comments Norma. I'll see David this afternoon when i help him repair our outdoor display of suiseki up at the collection. I will also have some chinese elms to pot.

One of the reasons i like to post here is to give opportunity to those that like to teach and share and to give equal time to those that use this forum for their education. If I raise a few eyebrows along the way about my posts, I actually don't mind for i feel the opportunities it kick starts is worth the effort ( and yes I learn a new way to think about things myself, so it's all good

I don't see the stone as a waterfall but a mountain stone with snow/ice.

Hmmm. I see a person . . . woman . . .Madonna (strange for a non-religious type like me, I suppose). I like the stone, but in this suiban (which I also like a lot, I see a lower, and perhaps a bit larger, island stone.

And, as someone said, a bit more sand.

I agree with Jim and Norma - I like the suiban and I like the stone - both are very interesting. However, they fight with each other for attention.

I would like to see a lower, very dark stone in this suiban that is full of sand. The sand could match either the suiban or the stone - highlighting the other. In both cases I imagine that the first thing seen will be the suiban since it is very different. But then, the eye will be draw to the stone and start to see the entire composition.

I like the way you explained how such a suiban would be viewed. Interesting, and makes good sense...

Dick, as I see it from here.
Offering friendly advise only, hopefully welcomed, I'm no expert, do not want to offend
doban if darker, black walnut color not so demanding of attention, pulls the eye.
sand fill to top edge with quieter neutral tan color, will better enhance the stone.
Peter's suggestion for positioning is best possible, for both shape of stone & doban
stone if not cut, lay down to the right, with white area forward, facing viewer,
level with bumps as top, can be seen as Lingering snow at foothills, or early morning fog.
could also be seen as crashing wave on Island shore, Scenic Landscape Stone...

if seen this way, raise front, lower back, use double mountains as top,
Peter's placement suggestion if viewed this way still the same...

Yesterday, I played with different sand color and have to agree color as tan works better than black.

My whole background in advertising/marketing makes me want to have something yell "hey! look at me"!
to the detriment of the japanese way of sublety. So I'm still learning and appreciate having folks like yourself
share their thoughts.

So soon as I sweep some more snow off the roof, I'll come in and warm up and see how i feel about the stone
lengthwise.

I was once told this by my wife,
" I just don't get it", your grown men playing in sandboxes!
sometimes we must see things as children do,
with a completely open mind, which sounds like fun to me.
I too tried different, out loud, look at mine,
and made of wood, because of high cost of bronze,
"just doesn't work I was told", but I'll let you be the judge

I think it looks great. We do the best we can when our resources are limited.

To anyone:

Stoner turned this stone to lay down, which looks good. I observe a lake in the right top of the stone. Would it be appropriate to display this stone with water in the lake? If it does hold water could it be classified as a waterpool stone?

I like outside the box thinking. Tht's why I ws willing to try something different. Without some new design we're pretty much destined to relive history. One of the guys is working with bronz containers that he' having made. I keep telling him I want one and all he does is smile....amaxing how heavy a small one is, when filled with stone and sand
