Mario I find that I consistently like what you do with foliage canopies. They are not too dense, nor too sparse, and they always have interesting shapes. They have some negative space and are not monolithic. They appear to be a integral part of the tree and not an afterthought. This is something I often find missing on trees even from the most highly aclaimed Japanese professionals.

Thanks for the idea. Does anyone know if I can cut back an American J. communis in the ground like that? It has been there for 10 years.

Dear Mario,
If you let me give you my opinion, I would place the 3rd branch (1st to the right) a little higher... and I would also place the back branch higher too!!
I believe that you give the tree more balance and would make it appear older, due to the denser folliage!
Opinions apart... GREAT BONSAI!!

I would leave it--you need the negative space above the foliage of that branch to keep the design interesting clown
