Pavel Slovak designed juni

Post  Andrew Campbell on Sun Nov 18, 2012 7:40 pm

Hello, this is my first post and as is such i should probably introduce myself. I'm Andrew Campbell and I live in Sunderland. I have been into bonsai for a couple of years messing about with 'S' shaped Chinese Elms.....but no longer. This year after meeting Rob Atkinson, my hobby has became a passion. I've landed on my feet with AKA matsu bonsai club and am enjoying the workshops immensely. This is however, not an introduction topic and so i will move swiftly on.

Earlier this year Rob asked if i wanted to attend Burrs. After a little explanation of who was going to be attending (artist wise) I jumped at the chance. So i took some material, mediocre material that would give the artists a bit of a challenge. Also something that i didn't have to work on all weekend so that i could soak up as much information as possible.

I took a large yamadori Larch and a Juniper. After some thinking i decided i would work on the juniper. The Juniper on Saturday 10th November:

Everyone who i asked for comments the night before (and Saturday morning) all said the same thing...get rid of one of the trunks since it was too far up the trunk and so looked like a 'slingshot'. Honestly i agreed! Only Rob thought differently and so he made sure i waited for Pavel's thoughts before doing anything drastic. Pavel came over and was kind enough to do me a sketch of what he could see and where this tree should go. 'WOW' was my initial reaction, followed by 'WOW' which was a precursor to 'how did he see that?'

However, due to the information which was constantly coming my way over the weekend i was overwhelmed. Between watching masters at work and presentations (Hans Van Meers particularly blew me away and sent my head spinning which was worth the £200 alone) I got no work done apart from thinning out the tree. This did not matter to me as I was learning from many different places and making some wonderful friends. Tony took us on a garden visit which blew my mind and he gave me a wonderful price on a lovely pine. Mikey who could be a 'brother from another mother' in terms of passion for trees as well as music and various other things (who also gave me a cracking accent plant, to which i could not thank him enough).

Thinned:

It has been a week since Burrs and my head is still spinning. I did a workshop with Rob Atkinson, our local hero. I still had the drawing which i will keep and cherish, so much in fact that i would only take a picture of the sketch and take that to the workshop to keep the original safe. I thinned a little further and wired the tree. Rob then worked his magic...he did what i could never have done and translate from 2D to 3D. After 4 blocks of wood and various doorstops we got the right inclination more or less and began to transform this 'slingshot' into something elegant.

As of today. My Pavel Slovak Design, brought to life by Rob Atkinson:

There is a longer trunk behind that beautiful ornate unglazed wooden box which you will be able to see once it is re-potted in the spring. The bottom right branch will be allowed to grow unhindered to extend out to better the direction of the tree. Also the filling out of the tree will better show the pads. The various Jin and Shari will be worked on and made to be more natural after being allowed to weather.

This type of tree brings out the difference between a good and a great artist. Working on expensive yamadori with inherent beauty that mother nature has provided is one thing. But making something elegant and beautiful out of a 'slingshot' really shows true talent. Thank you Pavel and Thank you Rob. Now i have to look after it affraid

I hope you enjoy this small progression and i will look forward to updating as and when. I also look forward to my stay here at the Internet Bonsai Club.

Thank you.

Fiona - Me too Wink

Smithy - Lovely to meet you matey. Also you have no idea how lucky she actually is....I'm a great catch after all.

Rob - Today was great, good crack as usual. You may not of seen 'that' tree (no one did apart from Pavel the magician!), but you refrained from removing the second trunk.

Hi Andrew and Rob
Very good work. Very Happy
I am glad that you have used a second trunk. I think that the base composition is very good.

Greetings Pavel
