Is there anybody out there who could give me some help in styling this Lonicera. I'm not sure how high is best for it . I'm open to any suggestions if any one comes up with something totally different and would love any virtuals. I've been working on the rot for the moment . It did have two big trunks when i dug it up but it died back to what is left. I.ve been carving the big stumps down and I've been finding which bits are alive to try and preserve whats dead.

Nice stump.

Unfortunately (for now) your shorter trunk is fatter than your longer trunk. I think you need to cut the tall trunk back, then encourage as many side branches as you can. That will help fatten that trunk. No sense having the tree expend its energy growing upward quite yet.

I wouldn't worry (or even think too much) about "styling" quite yet. Give yourself something to style first.

Nice raw material Smithy

and that's truely the best advice for the moment!

Possibly with the next repotting you may get more options.....what about a "lay down" of the tree for to develope a halfkaskade? Here's a quick virtual.......

Best regards
Martin

Hi Martin ,that is radical.I'm not sure that i will go that way but thanks for doing that, always happy to look at different views. I really want to repot it as it is in multi purpose compost and grit which is very wet and not helping the rot around the back. I dug it up about 18 mths ago now and its been in that all the time. There are plenty of roots filling the pot.

Hi Jim,
I,ve been sitting in the shed and looking at it and i can see it now .A couple more years getting that trunk fattened up and then go from there. I can't quite decide whether to chop after the second or third branch up.

Good nebari on that tree! Good place to spend the night on the cheap. Can't guarantee you will be alone.

Hello Smithy
Yes it's radical...and it's something only the roots can show/tell/direct. It was just to show an option. In my eyes to many people stay with the obvious possibilities. Also the first important point is one's personal taste.....if you don't like kaskades ....leave it.

Here are a few pictures of my trees....they are on it's way....not more.,...

An oak....collected 2 years ago....during repotting it showed a bad nebari...roots only at one side
trunksize 30 cm.

A cherry....nebari like a T . Repotted only with one side to make a kaskade.

A hawthorn...far far to long in neighbours gardenpot....horrible but interesting "roottwizzel".....

A pine....sideplanted in a wooden box.....just for my pleasure and phantasie.....

And finally....upside down....just to try it....having an idea in mind .....

Hi martin,
Its always good to try things out ,just to make art rather than sticking to the rules. Smile It will be interesting to see how they turn out.
