I have never "leaf pruned" an azalea but I have certainly drastically pruned many to the point of no leaves with great success. That said, I would only do this in the spring to mid-summer and to plants that are vigorous and healthy. I definitely would not do it this time of year in the northern hemisphere.

I don't know why all the question marks. He is saying -- and I agree -- that you don't normally defoliate a Satsuki. That's not to say you cannot do it, but why? Satsuki leaves are already small. Regular pruning for shape, etc. will adequately promote ramification. So why would you remove all the leaves?
