shiNpaku!!!
its shiNpaku not shimpaku. just a clearification for those who use M instead of N

Re: shiNpaku!!!
You are correct that the written form is shinpaku...but pronunciation with the n followed by the haku character (which turns to the pa sound) is m, so it would be easy for someone to make a mistake of writing shimpaku by just hearing the word and writing it phoenetically.

Re: shiNpaku!!!
It is just a question of transcription convention. Until maybe 20 years ago, in the Hepburn system, it was customary to transcribe ん by "m" before p for the phonetical reason explained by Kakejiku. It is not the case anymore.

Thanks for the "clearification". <G>
It seems to me to be a bit silly to argue over the English spelling of any foreign word -- especially one which is not normally written out in Roman characters. I wonder who decided that "n" was the preferred spelling in English over "m" -- a Westerner or a Japanese?
It's like arguing about the "correct" pronunciation of Latin since it has been a dead language of hundreds (if not a couple thousand) of years.

Heeheehee. No arguments there from those of us across the pond, mgallex, although I still have to accept those examples as spellings in student work over here.
But as I keep reminding myself when I feel myself getting too smug, the moral of the story quite simply is that if you're going to make a big statement about how to spell something, make sure the spelling you use in doing so is correct also.
Clearly.

It's almost a given that, if you correct someone's spelling or punctuation or grammar you will make a mistake yourself. And -- at least here on the IBC -- ALWAYS check where the "offender" is from; he or she is probably doing better in your language than you'd do in theirs.

Ha! That's for sure!
And as for the original theme of this thread, the same holds true for a certain satsuki. It's 'gumpo', not 'gunpo'.

Re: shiNpaku!!!
haha it wasn't my intentions to razzle everyones feathers about this nor was i trying to correct people like a grammar teacher. i was just working with someone this week and they made the clarification to me about it being an N not M. they also said that the sound "im" that people pronounce in shinpaku doesn't exist in the Japanese language.

Re: shiNpaku!!!
Kamakura - Shimpaku ?????????? Same "m" with a different vowel sound in front.
My Japanese is rustier than rusty after 55+ years, but that's the first time I've heard about the "m" problem. With a last name of Lewis, I'm more than familiar with the "L" problem.
And I'd swear that Ben Oki says shiMpaku . . . but then, it's been a few years since I've spoken to Ben, too.
Oh, well, It matters little in the longer run.

What a funny thread
However, what's the problem with shimpaku? I need some clarification (but not "clarifiction" or "clearification" please)

Interesting.
It would seem that the accepted botanical spelling in english is with an "M."
This spelling is used by;
Oregon state university Botanical gardens
The Morton arboretum
The Missouri botanical Gardens
The New york Botanical gardens
University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens
The Montreal Botanical Garden
Along with many others my quick internet search turned up.
Phonetic translations of foreign words are often allowed significant lee-way when written in english. For example take a look at just about any
French Creole names in southern Louisiana and their pronunciations or the Dutch phonetic transcriptions that resulted from the original Native Iroquois place names in western NY.

Re: shiNpaku!!!
Ha! You should have heard them with "Russell"! They just shortened it to "Ra-chan". And my last name, Coker, became "Koka" which is also the name of a satsuki. Apparently that was very amusing.

Re: shiNpaku!!!
Now that we're done extracting the urine from poor stagz and moved on to name games, let's just skip straight to that one where you determine what your porn star name would be by taking the name of your first pet followed by your mother's maiden name.
For the record mine would be Goldie Taylor.
