Anyone out there using a Makita 906? What are the main differences between the Makita models?

It seems that the GEO600 is nearly obsolete and I recently found a Makita 906, but I'm not sure if I should buy it. Any info would be appreciated.

I bought and have the GD0600 and it is awesome. I like paddle switch...it is safer IMHO.

There has been widespread use of the Makita GE0600 1/4" die grinder by Bonsai hobbyists for years; that model is now discontinued. Looking at the present 3 available models, one would usually think that a GD series preceeded, or was a lower grade than GE series, and that an 0601 was better or later than an 0600. Folks, I know this has nothing to do with the fact that Japanese read from right to left; but with theses die grinders, its just the opposite. Here's what they are:

GD0601 - standard 1/4" die grinder, same specs as the old GE 0600 but with switch moved to the side, and slightly restyled. Incidently, Amaozon identifies this as air powered, but it is (like all three of these) electric powered; you don't need a compressor.

GD0600 - Similar to the above, but with a paddle switch. According to Mr Recto's review here in Spanish language, the paddle switch must be contiuously held on to operate.

GD0800 - Similar to GD0601 but with 5 different speed variations ranging from 5000 to 28,000 rpm. The other two above models are fixed at 28,000 rpm.

the other 800 series model is also apparently discontinued, but had variable speeds all below 5000 rpm.

Doubtless there are technological and safety improvements also, but the specs and user features differ as described above. All can be used in a manner identical to the discontinued Makita GE0600.

It's a little heavier, but the paddle switch is much safer.

Have GD0600 padle switch. Works great but in some cases I'm missing variable speed [specialy using with brush] I should spend couple bucks more for Metabo at this time I bought Makita. Maybe next time. Right now for brushing using angle drill Makita. It does the job perfectly.

Dewalt too makes a nice one with a paddle variable speed. Just something else to consider.

I agree. To solve this, I intend to use my Dremel (which is VS) for brush work which should be delegated to the smaller tool IMHO anyway.
