The history of Big Momiji Part 1

This story is from the year 2008 on my first trip to Japan.

Riding in the van of the Master Urushibata and not knowing where to go or what you do always holds surprises, and maybe this one I remember most fondly.

This time we found this huge Arce palmatum. (Momiji)



After removing his winter "protection" .




The nebari was impressive about 45cm in diameter.




Its owner sold it, including the pot that was already prepared





Quite heavy. It will continue.....

The momiji is absolutely fantastic.....Can you say anything about the age of this tree......Is it naughty to ask you, how much money was paid for the tree....I only ask, because it is created, and bought in Japan.

I have no idea about age. Probably it is about from 30 to 40 years old.

the pines are fantastic pieces of material - a credit to the growers for producing such balanced and beautifully refined trees, and beautifully wired - very nice to see, thankyou. The white pine raft is so realistic while the ramification on the black pine is basically perfect.

my personal opinion is that the maple is just ugly though, for me it has no concievable image of a tree - just a very fat 'slug like' trunk with many branches that are too skinny, to create an image in balance with a trunk this fat the lower branches would need to be thicker than my arm....i think this is a case of a popular commercial 'bonsai tree' style taken a bit too far, but luckily for us all everyone has different tastes - I'm sure there are many people who would give 750,000yen when it is ramified and the branches are refined though.

I love the transformation of the juniper - less is certainly more with this tree, again a pleasure to see, very nice indeed

Wow! I wish that I can come across a tree like this. This is what a tree needs to look like, like the beautiful organism it is =)

The Itoigawa Juniper transformation is awesome; less is more and this tree looks very well balanced and old! I like the maple. I don't have access to that type of material (and/or can't afford) and would like to learn how to grow one with that type of taper; grow and chop, grow and chop.... Could you tell on this tree where the original cuts were?

I can´t not say much about the original cuts. They best thind of this tree is that you can´t find cuts.

On that maple, how would there be no noticeable signs of cuts on the trunk with that kind of taper? Would you have to use lots and lots of small sacrifice branches and never let them get fatter than an inch, rather than just a few huge sacrifice branches?
