My Larch fall colour Empty My Larch fall colour

Good day all
It's a beautiful, warm, sunny day here so I got the camera out this morning and thought I'd share my golden larch.

Beautiful autumn coloring, I love the larches, where I live in the Italian Dolomites there are entire forests. Very nice formal style of this larch. ThumbsUp

That is a very nice tree. Is there any reason why you are not wiring the branches downwards? I think this maybe the time to wire. That will really bring out the age in the tree. If it were mine, I might even jin one of the lower branches.

Also, find a more suitable pot for this tree. A slightly shallower and longer unglazed rectangular pot should enhance the image.

Thanks for the comments aman.
This tree seems to of been styled as a deciduous originally. Many of the branches are over half an inch thick with really nice mature bark. I'd hate to lose any of them trying major surgery. I'm still very new to bonsai and this is definitely not the tree I want to experiment on. Not sure if the classic pine styling is the way I want to go with anyway if it were in my skill level to change this one. I'm not crazy about the winter image of larches styled as pines. They look like dead pines that have shed their needles to me.
I actually do have a pot that fits your recommendation but it's occupied atm by another tree in training. Come spring I'll try to do a switch or maybe santa will bring me a nice new pot for this guy if I put it on my list. Very Happy

Mike,

Definitely practice on other plants before getting onto this tree. The bones of this larch is suggesting a Formal Upright and that is what I was talking about, not a pine style. Research Formal Upright styles and study high end bonsai pictures with this style to understand the basics.

Thanks.

Yes, I see what you mean about it enhancing the age of the tree after really comparing images of many formal uprights. The most convincing images have their branches sloping downwards.
I'll def have to get some experience on cheap material before I tackle this one. Most of the branches emerge out of the trunk at such acute angles that it's not just a matter of guy wires. More advanced techniques like notching and splitting would have to be done.

Thanks for your input aman

the larch in my area, no matter how ancient almost never ever have downward sloping branches. Do a google image search of alpine larch, you'll see what I mean. I'm happy to see a larch styled without the downward branches, nice tree.

Thank you mp.
It's very true that the natural growing habit of larches (around here anyway) and by googling images, is for the branches to emerge from the trunk angling upwards. I suppose that's what the original owner had in mind when they styled it this way.

It's a beautiful Formal upright style tree.

Here in Central Wisconsin we have many Eastern larch (Larix laricina) swamps. Some have very old trees at the edges of the swamp,

where the ground has more oxygen in it. Mature trees are in all sorts of shapes but you can see how the branches do have an

upward movement off the trunk.

I guess you could say they look like upward spreading, weeping over the years as the snow does bend the new growth down a bit if their tips retain their leaves.

Nice tree.
