Need a bug ID please Hero or evil bug I should kill?

Post  NeilD3 on Thu Jun 18, 2009 2:50 am

These guys seem to be here and there, once it cools off a little each day. Some type of fly?
The body is comma shaped, and the tale curls under. Here is the photo and the link to the album it is posted in. If you click the link you can zoom in pretty good and take a look.

I'm having a hard time figuring out which end of that is which. It is a fly? If it's a fly, it's harmless, but it's larvae might not be. Unless you see damage on something, I wouldn't worry.

If you wave your hand over it, does it fly away?

Are the more than one? A single critter -- good or bad -- is seldom a cause for worry.

A few more views -- including a "profile" -- with the macro function on your camera would help.

Jim,
It's got a coma shaped body, eyes on top are reddish. It does fly away when you wave your hand near it.... but not as readily as a housefly. I'll try to get another view. I don't have swarms, more curious than anything else.

The good news is that I have seen a bunch of different hover flies, dragon flies, baby praying mantis, wasps of various types, lady bugs, plus some frogs toads, lizards and odd snake and some baby turtles (all in 2/10 of an acre). So whatever these guys are they may not last long. Very Happy Very Happy

Great stuff Neil. If your property is healthy and supporting all those predators, you shouldn't have too many pest problems! Just make sure that in everything you do, you are encouraging their prospering, so they can do the work naturally for you.

Thanks Kev. It is a small small yard, but teaming with bugs and critters. I did notice that the hover flies were numerous after "nuking" the ants on my benches with neem oil. The snake(s) I caught not long ago unfortunately was a copperhead which are poisonous. So far we have not seen more of those recently. With a 7 year old boy around those are a bad thing, he catches everything he see's.

Very Happy

On the other hand . . .

You don't have so many predatory insects around unless there is a LOT for them to eat! Predators don't hang around when lunch is over. So keep an eye on your trees.

You are right Jim. Those were my thoughts also. I do an application of something on trees where I've noticed activity. That is usually my quinces. Up until now, it's mostly aphids and ants, with an odd caterpillar here or there. I also rotate a application weekly of something around the bases of my benches and on the tops of them just to make it a "not so easy place to live". (neem, seven, malthion, sometimes just listerine or soapy water).

Keep in mind, though, that whatever you are spraying for the "bad" guys also kills the good ones.

I haven't read Nina's most recent post yet, but I bet it says that clean tables, lots of space between trees, well kept (or no) moss, and other preventative measures beats all the spraying in the world.

Yes,
Housekeeping is key also. I generally keep a bucket or two handy around my benches that I use to throw in leaf debris etc I clean out of pots while watering.
