Escallonia Update 2009 Empty Escallonia Update 2009

Post  Guest Sun May 03, 2009 5:40 pm

Here are the latest images of the BIG Escallonia, members of long standing have seen this bonsai progress from a stump, (anyone got the pictures coz they are on my office computer and I am at home) I knew getting the correct pot was going to be a challenge, however British Craft Potter: John Pitt has really come up with a fantastic pot, Commissioned at the Best of British only a few weeks ago this lovely pot mesures 30 1/2" x 22" x 5" and it is PERFECT in every way, the colour and profile are simply wonderful... thanks John It will be potted in March NEXT year (see the Virtual below). The foliage is filling out nicely, the bottom branch on the left of the tree requires a lot more foliage but...hopefully that will only take a couple of years to fill out. bounce

That seems to happen sometimes. Log out then log in again. That often fixes the problem. I think it is caused by folks not keeping their pictures down to a fairly low KB. I know the site says it does it for you, but it seems to work better for me if I keep my pictures down to at most 100-200 KB -- usually under 100KB.

Tony, this tree has filled out so much in just 12 months it looks great what are you feeding it on. The pics do not do this tree justice. I have one very similar but no where near as big.

Ian.

Sometimes the pics take a while to load, and reloading the page can help.
Is your monitor small? I think larger, landscape mode screens are less likely to have problems.

I do remember this tree Tony... really coming along nicely. The composition as a whole has great movement, balance and poise. Beautiful pot. It would be good to get another snap of you in the picture to get an idea of scale.

Will you let the lower-left branch run for a couple of years to thicken before you set the pads?

Hi Justin, the tree is as fat as me... how is that for scale Shocked

Escallonia Update 2009 Escall11

For sure the lower branch I will let run and cut back, it really needs to thicken and fill out.

Here is a virtual that show how the tree SHOULD look in a couple of years

Escallonia Update 2009 Empty winter woes

Post  Jeremy Fri May 08, 2009 10:53 am

Hi TONY,
Did you give your beast any winter protection?
I had 2 well established Escallonia that have died. I think it was the low temps this winter that did the damage.
I noted that Chris Thomas also had a few that didn't make it through the winter.

So did you do anything that protected your "fat beast"? Shocked Wink Shocked

Escallonia Update 2009 Empty No protection

Hi Jerry, the tree has had NO winter protection and is so big I cannot move the tree on my own. As you can see it is alongside a bamboo fence and off the ground, the box is VERY thick walled, 2" thick... we did have -12 degrees this winter, the garden is VERY sheltered and does not get any severe winds. By coincidence an established Escallonia in my small front garden that I cut back at the end of last year completely died back to the stump... and is just showing new growth at the base of the tree.

There are some trees that just thrive in my garden and Escallonias are one, this big guy has only been in training for three years since it was dug out of a neighbours garden, I honestly believe that it could be show ready in two years... all I need is for Bob to give me a hand getting it to the car.
