want to try bonsai . . .

I am getting ready to try Bonsai for the first time. I intend to study some of the websites you guys have recommended.

I love flowering plants (I already grow African Violets & Orchids). Can you all recommend something for me?

Would Plumeria be suitable for Bonsai? If so, I could start from seed (or should I start from a cutting?).

Tell us where you live and we can recommend some plants for you. I assume it's at least semi-tropical, but plumeria is not a bonsaiable species. Look for small leaves or short needles.

Why on earth grow INDOORS when living in florida!?

Florida = BUGS and EXTREME HEAT

What?!?!? Extreme heat? Florida offers the best growing conditions for most tropical and sub-tropical trees you can bonsai.

Where in Florida do you live? It's a big state.

I'm sorry, but it's hard to take someone seriously who wants to grow bonsai indoors in Florida. Please tell me you are joking.

Nice edit. Still, I lived in an apartment when I started and I kept my trees outside. It's up to you what you want to do.

Ficus is a reasonable indoor choice, albeit without flowers.
Fukien Tea (aka Fujian Tea), Ehretia microphylla has small flowers and is another option.
In any case, some time spent out on your balcony if possible will benefit your trees.

One consideration you should think of is that your apartment is undoubtedly air conditioned day & night (if you have such a problem with heat). African violets will be all right, but how long have you been growing orchids? I have been growing orchids under lights for 35 years here in the North, & they don't do well in air conditioning. Some bonsai will tolerate it, such as Ficus benjamina & Schefflera arboricola, but others may not. Most bonsai will be happier on your balcony. Try some different species in different conditions, & see what works best for you.
Do join your local bonsai society. They can advise you better than we can.
