Budi Sulistyo at Bonsai Autumn 7

This is Budi’s demo at Bonsai Autumn 7 last weekend.
The raw material was a picea abies. Walter Pall was the moderator.

Peter is it true Budi had never worked on spruce before ? well it doesnt show he made a most excellent job

yes indeed, Budi never touched a spruce before in his life. For me he has found a good solution - after 2-3 years it will looks like an old spruce in the mountains after a lightning-stroke. We have to be patient waiting for new shoots, later we can refine the apex.
Budi is a specialist in tropical trees.

Budi Sulistyo is considered to be the 'godfather' of bonsai in Indonesia. He was the exotic highlight of this convention. They offered him two Eur0ppeen tree species which he never had worked with before. But he saw pictures of such trees, of course. First Budi worked with a European spruce (Picea abies) which was collected in Switzerland. In the end the tree looked very much like natural spruces at the timberline in the Alps. Then Budi worked on a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). He crated a nice small bonsai of it although he never had worked on any pine before. We are glad to have met such a bonsai master and gentleman.

It was a great pleasure to meet you, one of my favorites bonsai master, in Switzerland. Thanks for sharing the event. Anyhow, it was a bit too much to call me the 'bonsai god father of Indonesia'. I am just one of bonsai pioneers in the country.
