Anyone Growing Gmelinia phillippensis Parrot's Beak??
I have this shohin tree in development called Parrot's Beak or Gmelinia phillippensis. According to a Google search it is a tropcial vine from the Philippines, Malaysia, India, and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Here's a photo of mine. Just wondering if there are any others out there as bonsai. If there are, does anyone have some cultivation tips?
The leaves look a lot like ivy.

Rob,
Eric Wigert grows Parrots beak and sent several for the Shohin Bonsai Seminar held in June which he specifically grew for shohin bonsai. I have several great specimens still for sale and they are growing like weeds! A few have flower buds and I can't wait to see them bloom.

Thanks Bill. I got mine from Erik too. Can't recall where he said he got them.
Mine hasn't flowered yet, but the flower is supposed to look like a parrot's beak - what ever that is.

Hi Rob,
I got several of this specie. I'll post the one with massive trunk later later. It's one of my first tree, but I don't like the wood of this specie, very soft and prone to rotting once cut is made.
regards,
jun

Ogi,
This is actually Mulawin. In the states, it is incorrectly called Gmellina phillipinensis. In fact, it is Gmellina eliptica. The first time i saw this tree was in a 1989 publication of Bonsai in Indonesia. Back then, it used to be extremely popular as a substitute for trident maple (because of the trilobed leaves). In the verbenaceae familiy, it shares traits with Premna, Clerodendron and Lantana.
Kind regards,
Jose Luis
