Cornus mas the Vulkano

Hello people in 2003, I found this Cornus mas, he is certainly well over 100 years old. In 2006 I worked at the deadwood. Over the years I have repeatedly reworked the deadwood and 2011, it already looks more natural. The tree hath the name Vulcano because of his trunk, he reminds me of a volcano whose eruption is that green. Nebari 38cm, tree Height 80 cm.

I can see a criticism coming your way about too heavy jin around the base with a thin (out-of-proportion) trunk above it. However, I personally like it.

I have heard that dogwoods have very hard wood... do you think that lime-sulpher will be enough to hold the deadwood in place for some time?

haha - the above poster can see what probably everyone can, ( including you i expect ) - absolutely stunning beautiful dead wood but a very odd lolli pop of tree above it.

could you thread graft some shoots through the skinny trunk to 1) initially hide it when the leaves are out, and 2) they will thicken the trunk as they grow. With layers of foliage pads from the top of the dead wood to the apex this tree would remind me of one of the world class needle junipers in japan

Marcus, the dead wood trunk is probably 150 years old and therefore the thin stem 110 years of difference. If the crown is right slightly wider does the better. With the thin tree trunk, I have to live that is not as fast thick. From ennoble on the old Cornus I do not think much.

That is some lovely deadwood. Could you maybe post some other views of the tree. Be interestinting to see if there may be another front hiding in there somewhere so the deadwood is not so dominating.
