semi cascade virt on pot/rock

Hi guys,

I just wanna share my plan for this Bluebell bonsai. At present it's potted on an imported chinese pot, but I'm thinking of transfering it on a rock. comments will be appreciated very much. regards, Derick.

The branches are going to be wired to conform with the rock later when the tree has adjusted into it's new home.

Frankly, I like it in the pot.

And . . .

I don't quite see what you are going to do with all the roots that undoubtedly are in the pot. That flat tray/pot seems unlikely to support them.

It will work well on the rock, just be sure to carved the rock more for the roots. When I put my trees on a rock (except for ficus) I carved the rock out with as much volume as the original pot (except for the growing pot) as possible, then provide extra holes near the bottom and plugged it with wire mesh for the roots to reach the pot. make some sort of hollow container out of the rock. blue bell requires good volume of growing area to be healthy.

As for the aesthetic of the design, if it were my tree, I would maintain the original cascade form and placed the branch side on the left side of the rock hanging down. then I would probably remove the top branch.

PS. when transplanting the the bluebell, don't remove the original soil clinging to the roots, put it all inside the rock container. if it is not yet pot bound put the same soil/sand into the rock.

Great trunk. You'd be hiding that character with the stone. I agree that it should be in "a" pot, but not "that" pot. Something a little more shallow...maybe octagonal or a deep lotus shaped pot.

Please don't hide the beautiful trunk line on that rock. You have a nice rock but I'm not convinced it will work with this tree IMHO.
Put your energy into finding a nice pot for it perhaps. There are plenty of nice pots out there.

Here is some good potential, i like it
the texture of the trunk and the rock are good together.
As you say some more wiring has to be done but first thing will be to look at the roots as Jun mentioned.

Thanks for the comment... I was lucky because the rock has a round hole that goes diagonally from the upper right hand side through the bottom left... the hole will be widened to around 3"dia to accomodate more roots so that only the tips will be on the tray pot.

Thanks for the tips re Bluebell, I'll make the hole bigger as per your advise... I just came from Mang Mel to order the tray pot, he said he knows you... Aesthetically speaking, I do agree with you, but the problem with this particular material is the way the trunk is bent... your suggestion was the way I initially wanted to go with this one but I'll have to check during repot if I could do it that way...

I think the deadwood detail actually compliments the design of the rock, I will carve the rock a bit further on top to expose as much of the trunk as possible... if it doesn't work during repot, i'll just transfer it in another pot.

The way you are planning to combine tree and rock, you will end up with a tree leaning over rock, as it will never attach in the upper part. I like the tree a lot in another pot and without the lower branch. But then, that's just me..

Nice virt, I like it a lot! that's one option I could seriously consider if this doesn't work out... but for now I'll still try to adjust the location of the tree on the rock, so that just like Jun's suggestion, the cascade effect will be preserved.
I'll post another virt soon...

just finished cementing the rock to the pot... here's another picture with a virtual of the bluebell... I think I have to chop the rock and follow the previous virt... what do you guys think?

update after less than one month from repotting... I'm still letting the tree gain some vigor before I work on the branches...
