I've just been watching tonights show from the Chelsea Flower Show, and one of the gardens had the most beautifully barked tree I've ever seen. Check out that metallic copper sheen!

I've priced them up on the net and I can get 3 10cm dia trees for around £26 each. I want to plant one in front of the house, maybe give one as a gift, and use the third for airlayering. Has anyone tried airlayering this tree before? Is it even suitable? Even if the leaves are too big, the bark alone makes it worth a shot for the winter image.

they have them in our local nursery (not that far from you) , if we go on saturday , i'll have a look , i'm sure they are the same as the ones lining the street just outside our village , if they are the leaf size is quite small .

Hi Harleyrider
Thanks for posting the photo of the Tibetan Cherry.
A tree I'm trying to ID for sometimes.
Here's some photos I took during my last trip to Huanglong at Sichuan China.
I hope I'm not wrong with the ID. If so, hope someone can tell me better.

Thanks Tim, I'd appreciate any info you can get.

PkWk, I'm not sure that is the same tree. The bark in your pic is a diferent colour than the Tibetan Cherry. It looks more like a Betula Pendula (Silver Birch) to me, although I doubt they grow in Malaysia.

Maybe someone can throw some light on it for us?

The bark peeling off horizontally in shredded ribbons is typical of very many cherry-trees, including the one we find here everywhere in Europe.

Unless you can see the flowers and other features, it's sometimes difficult to tell one species from the other just from the bark.

Some photos I took in London parks last year, various "Prunus" :

Remember there is also Prunus serrulata. Slight bark variations between that and serrula.
