WHITE PINE PROBLEMS! Empty WHITE PINE PROBLEMS!

Post  Frank55 Thu Jun 23, 2011 1:30 pm

Hello,
I need help in finding out what the problem is with my white pine.
Since Spring, I've been getting one or two buds at a time that have turned yellow and died.
First at the top of the pine, then all the way at the very last branch at the bottom.
Any suggestions?

Hello Frank. A picture is always best. Have you looked inside the candles to see if there's anything in it. ie a bug or caterpillar?

The candles are shoots now....and see no bugs!
I have seen tiny white worms trying to borrow into the base of my cryptomeria, but I've been picking them
off when I see them. I have since treated both trees with Bayer tree & shrub & protect & feed which is a systemic
treatment. It come highly recommended by some very experienced bonsai folks...I hope it works.

I would like to post a picture....if I can only figure out how to do that.

Thanks, rabbit

We have a tutorial section.

WHICH "white pine" do you have? The North American variety, or the Asian variety? Or some other?

It's a "Nasu" Goyomatsu variety.

Hi Frank,

I have a similar looking tree and lose the odd shoot now and then.

It it general and widespread or just the odd one or two?

for instance the close-up seems to show a shoot right at the end of a branch that has been pruned off. I'd suggest that the branch bled out near the tip and dessicated that shoot.

The young shoots are damaged easily and can die back

If this is all over the tree, it sounds like a root problem- Waterlogged and or compacted soil.

Is your climate right?

These are northern temperate trees generally speaking and like a cold-ish winter.

it looks pretty healthy in the pictures at first glance.

Just some ideas

At first, in early Spring....I lost only two buds with two small branches at the very top of the tree and I thought the problem was over. Now last week, I noticed another bud another turning yellow, but now... on the very last branch at the bottom of the tree! I'm now told by a well know bonsai person here in the US that it's most likely a pine needle
tip bore and should treat the problem with a systemic insect control product. The rest of the tree is doing great with lush new growth... so I assumed it wasn't a root problem.
The weather here in the upper midwest of the US has been very cool and wet this spring and the winters up here are very cold most of the winter.
I treated the Nasu Goyomatsu with the suggested product and I'll just have to wait and see if the yellowing and die-off stops. I hope it does because the growth rate on
this little tree is the slowest of all my conifers....and will take some time to replace what was lost thus far. The pine is only 9" tall
Thanks for the interest in my problem
