Ficus pots

Does any one like ficus in a unglased pot??? I found a brown ruff texured pot with some chinese writing on it it is oval...i want one of my ficus in it... what do you think??? thanks john

I prefer unglazed pots. This is a tree, Ficus benjaminia "Too Little" I think during a workshop.

I agree with Billy. My rule of thumb is, color in the tree, complementary color in the pot.

I'm fairly certain Billy's Ficus is "Natasha' or 'Kiki', definitely not 'TooLittle,' which has distinctive curly leaves.

Ok, I defer to Iris.

I know that what ever it is/was as a cultivar it is reverting to the regular leaf F. ben.

Ruff texture does not really appeal to me, as ficus have a smooth bark. I will prefer a glased pot anytime, but if unglased, I would want the pot to be smooth.

When I look at the photo, the rough texture of the bark seems to match the rough texture of the pot. ???

The original poster did not specify a particular variety of Ficus. The tree in the photo is mine. Personally I prefer unglazed pots.

The charm of Bonsai is the diversity. We saw a lot of Bonsai in China in a variety of styles. I was facinated by the Yangzhou style, others didn't care for it.

The rule (for the Japanese tradition) was/is that a glazed pot is used only with flowering Bonsai and then the color should complement the color of the flowers. Also flowering Bonsai are not displayed except when in bloom.

However, as we see every day the "rules" are frequently ignored.

Thank You Yvonne,,for your responce to my question.. most always i see ficus in glased pots this is true...my other ficus trees are in them also..i just really liked this pot when i saw it and the tree is small so i can change it in a year or so if it looks really bad...thank you john

I Forgot to say in my first post...The ficus tree says on the nursery tag //ficus microcarpa tiger bark//..thanks everyone for posting..take care john

All of my Ficus are in glazed pots, but neutral colors,(except the mame) like beige or mustard. This seems to be the fashion in these parts. Tiger bark does not have what I would call a rough bark, but it is textured. Mine is in a neutral glazed classic window pot. It is not show ready yet, anyway.
You will have to put your tree next to the pot & see if they go together, like does this shirt go with these pants? Didn't you finally acquire a larch? It sounds as though that pot is suitable for a larch. Sometimes I acquire a pot simply because I like it, & it sits on the shelf for years until the right tree comes along.

THANK YOU MRS IRIS,,,This tree is a small one about 10 inches high..none of my trees are show trees at all just for my pleasure...the larch deal fell through but that is just as well it was a landscape tree anyway....take care john

There is much more freedom in the choice of pots for shohin bonsai (10" or less in the US). However, they are even less likely to be in an unglazed pot. How big is this pot? For a 10" tree, think about a six inch pot. If I recall, you were as eager for a larch as Neil Jaeger, you are not able to go collecting, & the only native larches in W. Virginia are way up in one corner of the state.

Meanwhile, consider a Japanese black pine for your rough textured pot, or get a mugo pine from the garden center.
Pity poor me. I have a beautiful celadon (lt. green) glazed pot with the "Great Wave" design embossed on it, that I used for my English hawthorn. The combination was perfect, but the tree died this summer. The pot is too big for any of my other trees, & at my age I am working towards smaller trees. So it is stuck on the shelf. I bet half the folks on this forum have such a dilemma.
On the other hand, there is the expensive (for me) Chinese pot from Osiga Co. that I bought for my Seiju elm. Of course the elm died, but it turned out to be a perfect container for my Korean hornbeam forest. Sometimes you luck out.

THANKS mrs iris i pulled up the web site for natures way,they do not show the trees for sale on the site,,so i called he said the trees change too much to post them and they do not ship anyway so i will find something in a nursery....thanks,,take care john

I would not buy a larch at a garden center. Do you ever get to Pittsburgh? If you do, be sure to visit the Phipps Conservatory. In the other direction, Columbus has a famous tropical bonsai collection. Those two cities both have bonsai clubs.
