Hi, I have quite a problem. I found a magnificent larch yamadori in the mountains. But because of it's complex root system it will be impossible to dig it out like this. So I was thinking; how about air-layering or maby even grafting smaller larix plants with their fine roots to the base of the big larix.
But I have never before done something like that on a larch, so I would be very happy for some advice and if it's even possoble. Has anyone done something like this before? As much info as possible...

Here's a photo of the larch that I'm talking abouth. Very Happy

Beautiful tree. I would attempt to dig it. If you have access to the tree, I would cut pie-shaped wedges in and around the present root base and pack the spaces with Sphagnum moss and re-bury those areas. In two or three years of doing this in different places, you will have enough new rootage to safely dig the tree.

WOW Nik it does look massive. Herbs Idea is what I would go with... simply digging the tree you may loose it and that would be a tragedy. Forget layering young trees to the old trunk, you would need to keep visiting the tree to ensure that they had not dried out.
