Shantung Maple

Post  jjbacoomba on Sun Oct 17, 2010 6:55 pm

The leaves on my Maple are an ugly brown color towards the tips.I do water everyday,if not I will mist my trees at least twice a day. The only trees that I have in direct sunlight are my junipers. Thanks, Joe

1. Maples are always stressed by our Southern summer heat and humidity and this look is normal for Maple leaves this time of year. In fact, the only time Maple leaves look good in the South is within two months of sprouting new leaves in the spring.
2.Maples are going to lose their leaves for the winter, but don't prune them because it will encourage new growth that could be damaged by a frost.

Try as you might, when it is fall, your maple's leaves will start looking like that. That's just what maples do in the deep south. You have to be in the cooler end of zone 8 or below before you get the leaf color without brown edges.
