Carved stone pots? Empty Carved stone pots?

Post  DBrooker Sun Apr 26, 2009 2:31 pm

I am very new to Bonsai - I will be visiting experts in my local area but in the meantime - Part of my interest is that I will be carving my own pots from Indiana limestone which is my preferred stone for carving - Can anyone tell me is there any minimum depth for a pot or is the depth based on the need depending on the requirement for the specific plant - Thanks for any comments - D Brooker

Carved stone pots? Empty Limestone pots

Post  Billy M. Rhodes Mon Apr 27, 2009 12:24 am

The design of Bonsai pots is very specific to the tree. A rule of thumb is that the depth of the pot should be the same as the width of the trunk, that the spread of the branches should cover about 2/3 of the pot. Round, shallow pots for bunjin. Cascades take specific pots.

But these are general rules. It is OK to experiment.

However, limestone will have a high, natural pH and not be compatable with all species of plants.

Billy - Thanks for your comments - They are appreciated - I will either develop a method to seal the inside portion of the pot or make a plastic liner for it - When I get a pot done I will post a pic - DB
