Working a Lone

I had a the great honour, of being asked to Bonsai Nan Kai, in Denmark at the weekend. I enjoyed four days of great company, bonsai, food, wine and a little Whisky This was Lone's tree. A Larch collected from the Dolomites, several years ago.

Lone pictured cleaning the bark from the dead branch. We decided together, that the tall part of the tree should be removed,as it lacked character and that some lower foliage would make for a more powerful and compact image.

I did some carving on the large bottom branch and a few others. I used the Makita first, to rough out and then put in some detail with a Dremmel.

We decided to wire the tree as it had grown so strongly. The Larch was carefully wired, being careful of the foliage and nothing too extreme was done with the bending, at this stage.

A picture taken slightly lower down, puts emphasis on the movement of the dead branch and the trunk.

Nice tree! Great job on the dead wood; when are you coming to the states to do a carving class?

Looks great Will. Sounds like you had a great time and made some new friends. I like the compact image & the carving....the deeper fishers in the grain are a nice touch.

Did not know you was here Will. Great job at the deadwood. Very natural carving, an great styling of the tree too. Glad to hear you have had a good time here.

great looking tree my friend! You took just as good care of Lone's tree, as I know how Lone took good care of you! Lone is one of the sweetest lady's I ever had the pleasure of meeting!!! So I'm actually a bit jealous of you!

Hello Jun and Tim. This Larch will stay in this container for a few years yet, for quicker development.

Hello Niel and Morton. I had such a good time with the club and have definitely made some new friends. Lone and Otto were the best of hosts.

Hello Peter. It was such a shame you couldn't make it. I'm sure our paths will cross in the near future.

Another Larch. Collected from woodland in Denmark and reduced to about 2 ft / 600mm. The flat cut was pruned out to begin with. The whole tree was then wired. The wire was big enoughand wired close enough to bend the branches so that theyleft the trunk in a downward slope. A new leader was carefully bent up.

Completely different material but a good image was achieved. This material will take longer to achieve an old image but a good start was made.

As soon as my back is well enough to travel again, I would love to finally visit you and work some trees at your club! So my dear when that may finally happens (fingers cross), you will be the first to know!

A collected Scots Pine. The main proplem with this tree was the T shape at the top of the tree. This was wrapped with raffia and heavily wired to bend the T from the horizontal. Scots Pine buds back very well and although the canopy is too large for the size of the trunk, this will reduce and ramify in a couple of years.
