Rock Pots from East Java

Hi All,

I just got some hand made rock pots from Tulung Agung,East
Java

A tree given by a friend. Any body has an idea of the name of the tree?

isit difficult to water wit such pots ? or r they for display purposes only ?

I see holes in the bottom -- smallish ones. But that won't matter for me. I don't find them at all attractive.

I think that these trees are taken to a new level of interest in these pots.
The shapes of the pots are great but I would like to see them be a little darker in color.
Are they made of clay and fired?

They are just natural stone shaped into a pot. Some of them are darker in color

Wow Jim summat else we agree on... I find them to be coarse in the extreme, neither 'Natural' or abstract.

Great! I'm more or less used to being the aesthetic odd man out around here. I don't like crescent pots, either.

the literati combinstion goes well but the microcarpa transformation is not appreciable considering the massiveness and great depth in your creation,classical styles go well in those new pots.....thank you friend for sharing

Yes, Ken. It is still in trial, at least there will be more choice on pots

I like the last one because in this rock pot the tree looks much better now than before. But I would prefer a darker stone. I also choose rock pots for pinus mugo ore pemphis acidula with a lot of dead wood but not for tropical trees like ficus.

As bonsai is a progressive artform and you have vast experience in bonsai creation, exploring new ways in bonsai is always welcome. When i saw your trees, some images from my nature classes with Lao Tze Cheng Cheng Kung came to mind, let's see:



The above image from Angor Wat (picture not taken by me). Perhaps by placing your ficus tree in a larger rock pot, a better image might be accomplished.



The second image is from rhododendrons in Yang Ming mountain. It is reminiscent of your ficus tree as the rocks in that area are huang (yellow) in color. The strong thick branches also contribute to the image, just like your ficus.



The third and last image also is evidence of a natural setting that can serve as inspiration for your new creations and it reminded me of your needle juniper tree. Located in Nantou County in Taiwan, He Huashan mountain is home to various juniperus squamata trees. Like the material in your rock pots, the rocks are yellowish in color.

A friend from East Java gave me those pots to use on my bonsai. You are right that the last one was the best, where as darker color will be better. I will tell them to find darker rocks.

Your pinus mugo is wonderful on a rock pot. I think we also have to find other alternatives besides traditional clay pot to enrich the bonsai art.
