Los Angeles Bonsai ? Empty Los Angeles Bonsai ?

Post  Bugeye Fri Aug 20, 2010 3:41 pm

I am going to Los Angeles beginning of Sept. Are there any worthwhile bonsai places to
visit in the LA area?

Well, Google gives me the Yamaguchi Bonsai Nursery.

Then, the Huntington Gardens (San Marino) have both a Japanese and a Chinese Pavilion. At least the Japanese pavilion has some bonsai on display. I've never been there, but have heard it is well worth a visit.

And the gardens themselves are said to be inspirational.

My favorites:
Mas and Gary @

Roy @ fuji Nursery, in Sylmar,

And This forum's own Bob Pressler @ kimura
http://kimurabonsainursery.robertpressler.com/

Pots and stand deluxe June and Dave,
1653 N. Main Street Los Angeles, CA 90012. And while you are there go over to little tokyo for lunch, and interesting shopping for things japanese !

Please also see the Phoenix Bonsai Society's list of quality nurseries we regularly visit there, http://www.phoenixbonsai.com/PSources.html#SoCal .

The Huntington is fantastic. I was last there right before I began my study of bonsai, so while I can say the bonsai were inspirational for me, I can't really comment on if they're worth the trip for an experienced bonsai fan.

But, it's worth it just to see the rest of the gardens. The succulent garden is particularly fun, if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I didn't have as much time in LA as we planned.
So we just stopped at Chikugo-En to see Mas and Gary. What a great time we talked
for at least an hour with Gary. This is one nice family run business. If you ever get the
chance to visit there, do so. It is well worth the trip. I also came home with a sweet little
Shimpaku and a great little pot. If you like Koi there is a great Koi shop around the corner.
Very Happy

most importantly: did you end up having to run across the street to the ATM?

That seems to be the quintessential Ishii experience!

No. The prices weren't any different than the average bonsai shows or vendors around
OH. But the qaulity was much better. Ishi style!
