Yes, the only way to achieve fine ramification and countless twigs is by wiring. Combining wire and grow and cut methods achieves superior branch structures. In Taiwanese bonsai, a tree is developed through a series of steps. Throughout all of these a lot of hard work is involved.

amazing, taiwanese bonsai artists really redefined the word "patience". they even moved it further hehe. very nice picture, thanks for posting.

I don't get it. I understand wiring is to put the branches (& sometimes the trunk) where you want them. How does wiring promote ramification?

Precisely, in order to achieve such multiple stems, wire is used to place twigs, as well as branches in position. Like I said before, this method is combined with the grow and cut technique. If left alone and only pruned, no three dimensional effect will be achieved.

Mao Pu (Celtis) and other trees are defoliated to display fine ramification.

Tell me, do they defoliate the bonsai just because is exbithion or to refine even more and wire ??
Doing it, will make the bonsai alive during expo?

When exhibiting a ficus, leaves are usually cut about two (2) weeks before the show. By then new- small bud points have developed. This is necessary to show the vitality of a tree. If not so, it might look sick to the judges.

Defoliation has many uses, including the reason you mention.
