remote control turntable Empty 360

Post  Jeremy Wed Jul 21, 2010 11:12 am

Hi,
Add me.
I want one that will turn in 5 degree incriments, 72 stops, so I can make a 360 degree movie of my trees as well.

I've got an old turntable in the attic we could modify. Want to book us a slot on Dragons' Den, Jerry: this could be our road to a fortune.

Note to those not old enough to remember turntables: Hah! you haven't lived 'til you've experienced a 45, a 33 & a third or even a 78 in vinyl! Wink

The first thing that comes to mind are the newer remote control ceiling fans? The high speed would be a bit much but maybe it could be modified to disable that speed.

Well, funny you should mention that. The very first record player I remember us owning in the late 60s had a 16 2/3 setting on it. Never knew what it was for at the time other than to create endless hours of childish merriment by playing your LPs at the wrong speed. 16 2/3 made them sounds like zombies while 78 made them sound like Pinky and Perky.

THIS is what a 16 2/3 should have sounded like apparently.

While THIS is what we usually did with the setting. Specially selected for you, John Wink

I recently rescued the steel base of an office swivel chair, as a caretaker was taking it to the skip (dumpster?). It has a hydraulic raise mechanism and, unusually, a flat platform where the chair once sat. Now I just need a good strong circular top to screw on. Before I do, I'll give Jeremy's suggestion a bit of thought as I'd love to to 360' tree animations too. Perhaps a shallow ratchet system on the underside?

Or.... leave the tree static but hold the camera and hang from Jeremy's ceiling fan as it revolves. Just watch your family don't think it hilarious to switch it to high speed while you're up there though!!!

I don't think you need any special software for making the 360 video Jeremy (especially in Chinese). Microsoft Movie Maker should suffice. Just load up all the images and get them onto the timeline then export as a .mov .avi file. If each image is used as a single "frame" in the animation it will be on screen for 1/25 of a second. You can slow down the animation by increasing the legth of time each frame is on screen. I think 2/25ths is around the time that most animators work on.

Some of the new digital phones and cameras allow you to take panoramic pics by holding the shutter button while sweeping the area to be photographed. If you take a 360 photo by walking around the tree, will you end up with a loop photo instead od a panoramic one?

Hi Kev,
Yes, but....
I want one that can be controlled by the mouse, creeping back and fro, rather than a movie as such, more a controllable turntable.
I have seen somewhere one that can spin 360 degrees vertically as well, so you can see the top and under the canopy. But that is possible a pipedream. No
