Ficus virens 5 years in training. It's not over.

Here is my ficus virens, collected in July 2005.

Beautiful tree. You have done an excellent job and are getting a lot of detailing(ramification) Most virens posted have been grown on a rock. I would recommend that you pick one sub-branch on the left and right side(especially the right) and 1) bring it down so horizontal(the primary branch goes 45 degree up) and 2) Then let this branch grow out and thicken-like to 2 feet even;also get rid of other fine branches on bottom so all the energy stored in trunk goes to these 2 branches and they get heavy. Later you can build sub-branches off these 2 primary. Your tree is very well balanced,taper,nebari.; and this tree will only get better.Nebari will spread from very low branches. Dustin Mann

Very beautiful ficus with already a great potential: awesome nebari, squatty (sumo-like) aspect ratio and promising ramifications. On the back one branch appears newly grown and as if it is clinging to the back. Is it my impression or is it a grafted branch or what? pl post the tree with trimmed leaves on. Thanks for sharing.

The clinging on the back, first it was a branch but it died so i try to grafted but it's not working. Finally i drilled trunk and put small branch through the hole and grew it. Due to the top of the trunk has die so it didn't have a good result, roots came out instead. But I don't mind because it's the back

This virens had grown on the concrete floor when I dig it from the ruins. So there's piece of concrete stick with the base, too. Should I take it out?

Very nice tree! I agree,more horizontal branches on each side would improve it,would make look more mature and powerful.

I would leave the cement alone. Ficus like growing over anything and it does not look bad. In a year or two the Ficus will cover the cement anyway.

Jerry's remarks about cement so very true. I had banyon growing over several feet of rock ;got rid of most of rock but could never get rid of part of rock clinging to base of trunks. Your cement may actually help with trunk flair. Once you get rid of many small subranches near bottom you probably will get new growth(like nipples) all over trunk base(nasty-some upside down) which is cool for trunk swelling. Dustin
