PLant Identification... Empty PLant Identification...

Post  Joe Hatfield Thu Feb 26, 2009 11:33 pm

I had posted this on the old forum this past summer. I have lost my bonsai journal with all my plant identifications since then... (tear) Sad

I was hoping someone could re identify. I remember that it was said to have large levels of caffeine in this plant. I shall post pictures from this past summer and as soon post pics of what it has become since. I also remember someone saying something about a type of holly. It produces green little berries, I believe. But their very small I remember.

THANKS!!

It's not very reliable to ID from a photograph, but this looks like it might Ilex vomitoria or yaupon holly.

PLant Identification... Empty photo searching..

Post  Joe Hatfield Sat Feb 28, 2009 1:00 am

I have found photos on both. The I crenata seems a little closer to what i have. The leaves of the vomitoria have more ridges on the edges it looks. I had dug it up last summer with great success. It grew and grew. I just checked on it last week and it seems to be loosing some of that new growth. I'm sure it was due to the cold winter. It was fully exposed to the weather so I was expecting some issues to occur. New pics soon, I promise.

Thanks for the post Jim.

That's a possibility, but since I. yunanensis isn't very common in the trade in this country and I. vomitoria and I. crenata are quite common, odds are that it's one of those. From pics I've seen of the Yunan holly, it seems to have more pendulous branches than this one seems to have.

PLant Identification... Empty I. convexa looks real close ..

Post  Joe Hatfield Mon Mar 02, 2009 5:59 pm

I. convexa looks real close but the leaves seem more rounded.. maybe I'm wrong. The leaves of my tree could have been somewhat fresh. Seems like the same tolerances, growth, etc. as the I crenata. Thank you.

_regards
