ESCALLONIA

Escallonia Rubra var. Woodside. Height including pot about 13 inches. In bonsai training more than 10 years.

Lovely Mike. Escallonia is under used as bonsai in my opinion.
I have one that's a bit bigger and I've been trying to find a photo of it in flower but for the life of me I can't find one!! I displayed it in full bloom at a show a few years ago and the marquee was filled with visiting bees :-)

Ian, I hope you can find the picture of your Escallonia in bloom. I haven't had any luck getting flowers on mine.

It's easier to get flowers on a larger tree. You have to let the shoots extend more to allow flowering. This means the image will be slightly out of shape. On a big tree this is easier to carry off, but a small one can be way out of shape!

This is my one without flower. I've just clipped it back and reapplied the lime sulphur.

Escallonia grow well as garden shrubs in my coastal climate near San Francisco. I nave some in my yard that always flower well. Guess it's about time to dig one up!
