Dwarf Powder Puff

I have a dwarf powder puff purchased at last years BSF Convention. It was in a eight inch plastic bulb pot. When I went to up pot it today I found that it had been previously up potted from a very pot bound situation in a four inch pot.
So, I removed all of the roots back to about three inches to get rid of the circling roots left over from the four inch pot. I then repotted back in the eight inch pot with new Metro Mix 550.
Questions: Do you think I killed the tree?
What specific species do you think I have based on it coming from a South Florida Bonsai nursery.
