BONSAI PIGGIES
i hope the smart bonsai piggies of the upper midwest (north america) were busy building brick houses during this protracted fall... because the times, they are a changin !
if you get caught with your pants down in your house of straw or sticks, it is your own fault
good-bye to what has been an absolutely stellar autumn !!!

Having things together is important as long as you understand what "having it together" really means. You should have the put your trees away early enough so that you don't suffer from glutious frozen officus, but (no pun intended), if you put your trees away too early you wind up having to worry about winter watering and or making the kind of environment, tree munching critters will favor and make use of as a winter shelter. I never put my trees away till they have endured a couple of heavy freezes. By this time rodents and other creepy crawlers will have found a home not in your bonsai. Too early and you are seting up a winter shelter for the very same critters you want to do without.

Yeah, the times they are-a-changing: more unusual weather conditions, droughts, unexpected cold spells, wind from china, or the old continent, but I'm pretty sure things will change in the coming 4 years, and we'll all live in a paradise for bonsai, and people.
