SPEKBOOM GROUP PLANTING Empty SPEKBOOM GROUP PLANTING

Post  Kevin S - Wisco Bonsai Tue Jul 14, 2015 12:12 am

sorry to shout in the thread topic but it really is hard to whisper a word like SPEKBOOM silent

had an awesome day yesterday with the milwaukee chapter of the AAC (arbor arts collective) and built this lil spekboom grouping in the lush environs of member ron fortmann (who is also the proprietor of ancient arts bonsai www.aabonsai.com)

took about 5 hours and several "re-doings" before i was happy with it...

it may not be evident in the photos, but the whole 'scape is on a downhill slope, which is why the lower tree on the right is "falling" in that direction... intentional... some of that downhill will be accentuated as it grows and develops...

the separate rock will be changed out, but thats what i had at the time...

the goal now is to fatten up the trunks and create one intertwined, contiguous and inseparable canopy (and root system)

the 3 Cs are, as always, welcome.

Hey Kevin. What catches my eye the most, and it's a cool effect, is the lower pad of grass stepping up to another pad, stepping over to the taller brown grass, then the eye wants to follow some expectation of a path back across the scene and up the hill through the trees. Well done!
Concern: do you have enough soil in that to fatten up those trunks as you mentioned?

A bar chair just as a turn table for work.
The homemade pot rock it with spekboom group plating and weeds which looks very natural.
Sloping hillside to make the plant look like growing edge of the cliff.
Uneven bottom pot seems to be a movement.
Nice job!

thanks david... and i do believe i have enough soil in there as i had to sacrifice some of the rock features along the interior of the back wall in order to ensure that i do... hoping as time goes on, some of those hollows will become more visible again.

twyama - thank you very much !

oh yeah - thanks to john geanangel for the muck recipe !!!
so far the best and simplest one i have tried yet...

Be honest brother Kevin. Do you only have these so you can say "Spekboom" as often as possible? I'll let you in on a secret. I'm looking for one for the very same reason Smile

Have a great week!

hey hey brother sam !

yes it is almost as much fun saying "spek-BOOM" as it is to say "salsa" (seinfeld reference)

if you are serious about wanting one, i could maybe get one rooted up for you and bring it down in october...
just let me know.

Definitely! That'd be awesome!

It must be impossible for a Spanish person to order seltzer and not get salsa. You have the seltzer after the salsa Smile

You gonna like it even more now, Kevin. Spekboom translated to English is 'Bacontree'. Spek is bacon in Dutch and Afrikaans, and boom means tree.
Spoiler alert: I don't think it tastes like bacon Neutral

Nice work Kevin, it can only improve with age....

'Dankie' in Afrikaans,  'Danke' I think is Dutch

Yes its correct if you directly translate the word, but correctly Spekboom translates to Elephant's food.

Danke is actually German, the Dutch equivalent is 'dankjewel' or 'dankje', which is short for 'dankjewel'.
The a is pronounced like the a in 'after', and the e is pronounced like the u in 'ugly'. Yes, weird, I know Wink
Dankie for the explanation Andre!

Great article!
All this time Kevin's growing these, and we never knew they were consuming carbon like a teenager sucks up chips and soda.

after andre's recommendation i have been putting it on my salad occasionally...
the small leaves are a bit bitter but the large ones are delicious and almost citrus-ey ?

so, is it pronounced speck-BOOM or schpakbuum or spekenzieboomboom or... ?
