2004 i was one of the first in Austria who tried to make a bonsai from roses. I plantet this rose 1990 in my garden and digged it out 2004.
The best thing of a rose als bonsai is under the earth. Because from the thik roots you can make good trunks.

2004 after digging her out from the garden.

Two years later i plantet her in a new pot to get flater roots.

I do not like roses in general but your rose is definitely giving that dislike a run for its money. Lovely specimen.

Now I also want one! A couple of questions:

Do the compound leaves reduce in size easily?
Do you leaf prune?

Thank you for your nice comments.

It is easy to make a bonsai from a rose. But you must take roses with small blooms and smaller leafs. Most of the variety multiflora roses oder polyantharoses have this properties. You also can take wild roses.

The best of a rose if you dig out ist under the earth. Mostly she has one ore more thick roots and this roots are the best trunks.
So if you dig out a rose in spring or autum, cut it back realy hard. Only one, if possible a small shoot should be left over. This ist the later branch to style the crown.

Because the wood of the roses is very hard and you cannot curve as you want. The branches should be wired when they are thin and flexible.
So the growing and cut phase beginns. Let her grow and cut it back in autum. In an few years you have enough side branches for a good crowne.

Now my rose starts in spring with strong growth. I let her grow until End of June. So the multiflora rose makes flower buds with many blooms. Like in the picture. You should not use this flower buds. They are to long and dont look good. So cut it away. All of them. Cut also the strongest shoots back to one or two buds.

After a few weeks the rose makes flower buds again. But there is mostly only one small bloom. It looks much better and they bloom until the winter beginns.

She loves every fertilizer, but dont give heer to much. She is really uncomplicated.

Try roses, it makes fun and looks good.

The main question now, is, will my wife let me convert her regular pot plant into a bonsai? Twisted Evil

Outside bad weather. So it is time to make some pictures and a update of the rose.

My rose is blooming also in winter. The temperature in the winterroom is +4 degrees Celsius, so the rose holds her blooms until spring.

10 years after digging out the rose the ramification gets better and better.

Great specimen Herbert! Thank you for sharing your progress; and the most helpful maintenance tips as there is not much out there, it really is appreciated.

Hi Herbert, nice Rose, did you tried any other species of botanic Roses as bonsai? I´ve got Rosa roxburghii, Rosa wichurana, Rosa multiflora, they are great for bonsai, much better than hybrids. I´m working with them with great satisfaction.
