Wood stain/sealant

Hi everyone. I'm in the process of building a small bonsai bench and was wondering what to stain /seal it , or even if it needs sealing at all seeing as it's a pressure treated frame with decking boards for the tops?

When I built mine, it was pressure treated and I decided to let it weather on its own... I think staining would be for aesthetic purposes. Mine is not a 'display' per say so I didn't take the time and effort to stain.

Thanks for the reply daudelus, that was pretty much my thinking too if it's been pressure treated already. I would like to stain it to match the rest of my outdoor wood items but that can probably wait for a few months. I couldn't resist putting my trees on it already anyway!

It's not brilliant I'll admit but not bad for a first attempt and better than the trees being on the floor!  I'll be putting a reed screen around the back and side too to try to cut out a bit of wind and generally look better

The preservative from pressure treatment of most lumber only extends about 3 - 6 mm (1/8 - 1/4") depending the type (ground contact is deeper). If you cut the lumber and expose untreated surfaces those will deteriorate faster than the treated portions. Therefore, you may want to treat the cut surfaces. Based upon my experience this includes screw and nail holes. I may start drilling the holes, dunking them in preservative, and then putting things together.

That looks really good made, I noticed its on your balcony. All my trees are out on my balcony also, I have some monkey poles up with bit of decking on top, i didnt use any wood stain on mine. I also use those Stuart balconeere troughs, they are filled with compost for weight and lined with cat litter and ive just placed a few of my trees on top, works great if you have limited space. I have 24 trees on my balcony

Thanks for the comments guys. Good point about the cut ends marty. I've decided I will stain it once this bout of wet weather passes and it's dried out again.
I'm also trying to come up with a neat way of catching the excess water that runs off atm so it doesn't run down into my downstairs neighbours balcony, probably will just end up with some long drip trays underneath for now.

Bobby, i had looked at those troughs too but I'd be too worried all the time about my trees blowing off of them, it can get pretty windy up there at times!

You can use humidity trays to stem the flow of water. I hear what your saying about the wind, Im on the first floor and it can get pretty gusty, but saying that, my trees were sat perched on troughs all winter and all through the gail force winds that rocked the country and they were all unmoved. I find that the pots are pretty heavy. Especially if the soil is not left to dry out..My balcony is at the back and backs out onto a communal garden, nobody is usually out there, I probably wouldnt risk it if there was a main road out there  

There is also the option of securing the trees with a thick piece of bonsai wire, to hold them in place.

Very nice Bobby! Nice trees too Mine are pretty much all garden centre potensai and young trees atm but I'll definitely post some pics when it's stained and screened.
