Most likely white worm in wet moss; a nematode. Pictures and all the information you's want here: http://nematode.unl.edu/wormgen.htm
Best wishes

Thank you that's what I thought it might be. The website is quite an academic one, if I wanted to write a thesis it would be great and if I had a microscope and I had hung onto the little blighter. To  find out whether they are harmful or not is what I want to know. Are they a threat an evil peril or not?
The moss certainly could have been pretty wet, more so than usual this year in Somerset. And after the repotting there was only a little moss  left among the roots which I was cleaning to show them off better
Cheers

With nematodes, it depends on the species. Some are beneficial and attack harmful fungi and microscopic & macroscopic critters that might be in the soil, while others (like root-knot nematodes) can be the bane of gardeners. But like I said, unless you can properly ID which species it was your only options are to purge the soil and kill the little beasties or wait and see if any harm comes to the tree's roots.
