Chinese Elm Budding in Winter? Empty Chinese Elm Budding in Winter?

Post  peteclat Wed Jan 15, 2014 9:20 pm

Hi,
The Chinese Elm is the first deciduous tree I've owned and it has started budding in the winter. After the cold spell of -2 degrees, it has jumped back up to 50 and it has decided to bud. I was wondering if there is anything to worry about?

Thanks

Where do you keep your tree? That could be the culprit, your probalbly going to have to bring it in, and put it somewhere where it will get good light if its starting to push growth, put it outside on warmer days, in at night, mist the tree a lot indoors till spring, good luck.

Protect it from a frost/freeze.

Not all Chinese Elms are fully deciduous, some will keep their leaves even after a frost.
I guess this is the first tree you have and the first winter........ I guess it is outside.....

I would give it some protection, but don't go overboard and get it in the warmth, if you do that, the earliest you can put it outside again is in spring. A good place is a light frost free space, in front of a window in a garage, something like that.
You might lose some new growth when you keep it outside, but that is no real problem, the tree won't die from that.

Killers are: very wet soil and a severe frost together, being waterlogged for long time, exposed to strong winds when the pot is frozen.
