juniper care?

I recently acquired a juniper nana and am not sure how to care for it as I only have experience with tropical trees. I know that they are evergreen which works well in my climate (northern Ohio, USA). However, I'm not sure what to do with it during the winter months. I thought about keeping it out on my porch in a place where the snow can't reach it. Will that be sufficient? Also, how often should I water the tree while it is dormant? Is there anything else I need to know about this type of tree?

They're not deciduous(leaves falling off), but is a cold hardy evergreen which should only be brought inside for a few days of display at most. There are certain to be people who know more about them than I do that may chime in since I deal mostly in tropicals/am a newby myself. Google "juniperus procumbens nana care" and you'll find a ton of resources. It's a pretty common piece used in bonsai, particularly among beginners, so information is readily available via the interwebs.

Keeping it in a sheltered place on your porch for the winter is OK, but it will be safer if you put it in a Styrofoam container or something similar. Check the soil occasionally & only water if it is dry. Won't need much water during the winter. Join the nearest bonsai club.

You should be fine. I live in northern Michigan and leave them right outside. I dig a hole larger than the pot and put it in and cover the pot and soil with wood chips. If I don't have much snow I throw some straw on it along with a few moth balls to keep critters away. If there's snow I just let them get covered. Snow is a good insulator. Hope this helps.

Did ou by any chance get the tree off EBay?

Also, procumbens tend to turn brown naturally in the winter. Don't be concerned. It will green right up in the spring.

With regards to the Styrofoam box, do not put the lid on the box. You would do well to put 1-2 inches of mulch in the bottom of the box, set the pot/tree on top, then put in more mulch to cover the pot up to the base of the tree. Then set it on the porch. It is all right for snow and ice and rain to fall on the tree. You might want to punch some drain holes in the bottom of the styrofoam box to let water escape; preventing the pot from drowning. The tree should grow well enough until warmer weather.
