climate zones??? Empty climate zones???

Post  waway Fri Oct 02, 2009 10:05 am

Hi everybody.

Would just like to know if the climate zone of some place would be the same climate zone of our place with the same latitude? If for example, mexico is zone 11, can I safely say that Philippines is also zone 11?

In a word: no. Climate depends heavily on variables such as elevation and proximity to the sea. I've only seen climate zone maps for the US but the boundaries for the zones certianly are not straight and do not follow latitude lines.

I've Googled pretty much all of the terms I can think of to pull up a map of USDA equivalent climate zones for the Philippines. There doesn't appear to be one, or I'm having an off day! Now someone can hopefully prove me wrong?

Global Climate Zone information can be found at: http://www.climate-zone.com/

Google 'Global Climate Zones' and several charts will pop up under "Report Images".

US Climate Zone chart at: http://www.madico.com/images/climateZoneMap.gif

The National Arboritum shows the US Climate Zones and the map Legend (shown at:
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hrdzon3.html ) can be compared to any other country's
minimum annual temperature averages to compare to the US.

http://www.climate-zone.com/ doesn't have the Phillipines zone map we are after though, I already checked.

Googling 'Global Climate Zones' Images does bring up lots but none of them have the detail of USDA zones for the Phillipines.

The details on the National Arboretum site are helpful if all the average minimum annual temperatures are known for an area.

Hi,

This page here:
http://treesandshrubs.about.com/od/treeshrubbasics/tp/worldhardinesszones.htm
has a link to this scientific article:
http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?pid=S0103-90162008000700009&script=sci_arttext
(pdf linked at top of the page) which has a map that places the Philippines into zone 12, with a mountainous area in the north in zone 11.

Kev,

USDA maps won't carry the Phillipines, Europe, Asia or anywhere else. Only US & Canada. But one could pull up climatological information on the Phillipines and compare it to the USDA map and reach a fairly reliable educated guess. (Although other considerations must be factored in, like annual rainfall, humidity, etc.)

http://en.allmetsat.com/climate/philippines.php (also has the rest of the globe by link on the bottom of the chart.)

USDA charts stop at Zone 11.

I know Jay, but the USDA hardiness zone idea has spread globally, so that many areas now have maps in a similar vein, like this one for Europe http://www.gardenweb.com/zones/europe/

It is such a useful idea that many others are keen to see how their country's climate compares. It is a very useful standard for comparisons when discussing particular trees.

As someone said earlier in the thread, the Philipines are Zone 12 with a little Zone 11.

Comparing the Philipines to the USDA map for the US & Canada is like comparing Baskin Robbin's 31 flavors of ice cream to McDonalds vanilla. Not much use for a menu with only one item on it! LOL

The Philipines are tropical, I believe "winter" is "wet tropical"!

With the spread of territory that comprises the UK through Europe all the way to Japan, a hardiness zone map is essential. A hardiness zone map for the Carribean, Central America, Hawaii, Samoa and the Philiines doesn't serve much of a purpose because each area is pretty much constant.

Kev, this is what I'm trying to achieve... to understand how a certain kind of tree grow on different climates and how they are taken care of. Sometimes when searching for some information about a tree on the net most of the times they would use the zones to indicate their natural habitat. And that gives me (and maybe others also) a problem if that zone it is referring to is not more or less compatible with our/my climate.

I hope that someone will come up with a universal climate zoning for us to understand the current situation wherever we are in the world. Just my two cents Idea

Guys thanks for the very informative and helpful links.
