Peter Adams' illness
Some of you may have heard that bonsai legend Peter Adams is currently very ill. Craig Coussins has asked for the following to be posted:
Peter Adams recently suffered a serious illness and is currently in Intensive Care in a hospital in Bolton. He's in an induced coma with prostate cancer and cancer in the bones and I understand his kidneys are failing. Let us hope that he will pull through and I would like you to keep him in your prayers.
Peter taught me Bonsai from 1974 until 1990. He has been a great inspiration to many Bonsai artists over the years and trained almost everyone in the UK during the period from 1972 to 1992. He headed up three conventions I organised in Scotland and he has always been a friend and my Sensei.
The picture below was taken in 1990 by Trevor Yerbury when we were working on a famous Scots Pine called Big John that was originally styled by my other teacher, John Yoshio Naka in 1984 and is now in the collection of Steve Tolley.
I am sure we would all wish that Peter makes it through and our thoughts also go to his family at this very stressful time.

Re: Peter Adams' illness
That is very sad and bad news indeed! Peter Adams books have been my inspiration in my early bonsai years! Especially his Pine care technique's helped me enormously! I hope and pray that he makes it through these bad times and wish for strength for his loved ones.
Best wishes Peter,

Re: Peter Adams' illness
times like this make mortality really sink in...........i'm glad he is in the UK, probably by design..... his books were the one single thing that inspired and instructed me in the captivating hobby that has run for more than half my life. two of my friends have trees from Peter - i know they are cherished...the objects of our desires outlast us all, we are only part time guardians it seems

Re: Peter Adams' illness
I have just returned from visiting Peter Adams in the Intensive Care Unit in Bolton General Hospital. I met up with Peter’s wife Kate and a close family friend. Peter has been disconnected from the various machines and has NOT woken.
I have been asked to NOT detail Peters illness except to say that his Pancreatic Cancer, Blood and Kidney infections have left him very weak. Peter is very poorly indeed and will NOT recover; it could be a matter of days, or even hours.
The sickness came on very quickly; Peter and Kate were over in Bolton visiting friends and were out walking the hills only last week!
I cannot think of anyone in the world of Bonsai who has NOT heard of Peter Adams, nor been influenced by his teachings and books. Peter was instrumental in bringing the art of bonsai to the UK. His was the first book I bought and fired my imagination 30 years ago. His contributions to Bonsai Focus extended his reach to new audiences worldwide. Kate wishes me to pass on her thanks to the Bonsai World for your thoughts and prayers.

I'll miss him. I don't really know him, though we've met a few times.
The very first bonsai book I ever bought was his first book. I got it at Harrods, and I still have it.

I'll always treasure The drawings Peter did of my trees and the time I was lucky to spend with him. He taught me a lot about how to look at bonsai while always making me smile with his stories. My heart goes out to Kate in this difficult time.

My heart is very sad. I was fascinated at our one encounter. I will cherish the memory of a very distinguished fellow, who with his book and his person has left a most enjoyable impression in my life.
My most heartfelt best wish to Kate and family, most sincerly, Rick Katzin

It is great news Peter is recovering but still very poorly. I want to make my position clear as I am not doom monger. Bottom line is what I posted was at Kates request and that was the situation at the time.

Re: Peter Adams' illness
Thank you Dorothy. I have been thinking about Peter daily since I heard about his illness. He has been a big inspiration for me since I started practicing bonsai, and this has really lifted my spirits. I literally cheered when I read your post.
