Scroll II: Made in Japan

This is a painting of a  (杜鵑 とけん Token) Cuckoo
So my last questions on the season of the painting were ignored....So this time I will give the season. In Japan, the Cuckoo is a bird used to signify summer season...So was this framed with that perspective in mind? If so, what trees can be used to display with the painting?

Pines would have to be ruled out because they are not seasonal. Acer palmatiun, provides lots of lovely shade
in the mountains during summer and might serve the purpose because the leaf color would be a dark green and not the variables it shows during spring and autumn.

Dwarf Magnolia Grandiflora in bloom

Unfortunately, the photos are too small for me to appreciate the scroll. When I open the link to the hosted image it is even smaller. So I will say they look nice, but can't really comment, because could not see detail.

Dwarf Magnolia Grandiflora in bloom

Nice idea...Can you get a bonsai Magnolia Grandiflora to bloom...I heard they rarely bloom when under 3 to 4 feet?

If it does bloom...early summer good choice...

The point of the scroll is to blend into the background and complement the tree while placing it in a season or telling a story... without being the centerpiece....If you want a larger picture to evaluate, then go to my blog at www.wallscroll.blogspot.com

I like the cuckoo how it is just a couple of brush strokes. Very tasteful. Nice. Thanks for the blog link, I will open the images there when I want a closer look.

to me this is only a suggestion of a bird and not any specific kind.
If I look closely a sparrow comes to mind, because that is the kind I always see.
The feeling I get when viewing is that of open air because of all the  white space,
a quick glimpse upward, chirpy soft tunes, then gone and just memory left behind.
I also feel this shuttle suggestion of a familiar bird could also be used for spring
with most flowering trees, peach, plum, apple, almond or pear.
and if paired with fruiting trees like pomegranate, persimmon or apple even fall
Again I would like to mention that the combination of fabric colors and patterns are exceptional.
IMHO outstanding results speak for them selves...

P.S. about Dwarf Magnolia! I don't seem to have that problem! free flowering
my tree is about forty years old, container grown, over fed and defoliated yearly.

I think I appreciate most the positioning of the art in relationship to the scroll. So easy to picture this bird working itself down the branches to investigate the bonsai. Around these parts we have a blue jay who raccus calls would be the perfect art subject for something similar.

Appreciate the enlargement.

I agree about artwork, I asked artist to be less detailed. Yellow billed Cuckoo is what I see (and what I need for NY), but everyone is free to have their own interpretation.
As the question was posed, is this Summer season....
One (and only one) Japanese display concept is to project ahead...So in Display, if it is summer you try to convey the upcoming Autumn season....Why is that the case....? So if this is a cuckoo and you are using to project the summer season in Springtime, should the bonsai or sanyasou be in the Summer or the Spring?

Why I posed the questions was the concept of cloth selection as it relates to art (Danshoku/Kanshoku)....but that is probably best held in a face to face setting rather than online....might get confusing. But to answer the question, no these are not good cloth selections for placing the subject in summer...but Spring works...

Great idea about the Blue Jay...spread the wealth around as there are many talented sumi-e artists in your neck of the woods.

Season projected forward always! This key rule! I not only apply but freely disseminated as well!
Specific reason why cloths will only work for spring would be over the top to the general viewing public!
Only a "master Craftsmen" Sensei like you would be aware of this extremely refined selection possibility.
