Monster Privet Empty Monster Privet

Post  F. Waheedy Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:18 pm

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to show progress of a privet stump which I lifted in July this year from my backyard.

It's so huge, I've not been able to move it ever since it was planted in a wooden training pot.

Hope you like it. Would appreciate any comments/ideas.

Regards,

Faisal

Enough material to keep you going for years.

The one you have lifted is going to be a good one.

I've got to cut my privet hedge tomorrow ,I'd rather dig it up but my wife likes the hedge rather than a fence.

Ye Gods! I thought the ones I'm collecting were big enough, but this makes me think mine are mere tiddlers!

Looks like we've cornered the market in big Privet stumps cornered, F! Twisted Evil

Monster Privet Empty Thanks

Post  F. Waheedy Sat Sep 19, 2009 11:28 pm

Thanks Will, HR & Smithy,

It sure is massive. Theres a cpl more I'll be digging. Trouble is its so huge i can,t even take it to any workshop for carving.
I wanted to move it to a sunnier location but gave up after trying a cpl of times. But I'm sure in a couple of years it will make a specimen bonsai and then I wont even remember all the pain I've gone through digging it. :-)))

Cheers

its just like child birth, you forget the pain then go back for more. A bit of pointing in the right direction and then hopefully you end up with a fine specimen, or a monster you can't get rid of.

I suggest that you either collect the rest of the stumps, or at least start to train them where they are. With the ban on importing trees material like this is going to become (a) very desirable, and (b) very scarce!

Hi all,

Some of the pictures of Privet I dug up last summer from my back garden.
Still a looong way to go.
Like always, I'd much appreciate any comments.

Regards,

Faisal

I suggest you cut back the long growth very hard. Privet branches become quite stiff and difficult to bend. If you wire the young new shoots to put some character into the branches, remove the wire and let the branches grow to a decent thickness and then prune back, then repeat cycle. The box you've put it in looks like the kind of plastic that perishes in the sun, so be careful. Would still like to carve it though Monster Privet Icon_biggrin

Thanks, Will. You're right. They do get quite stiff. I will cut back the long growth. Will also do, as told, with wiring. I'm definitely coming to you for carving with a cpl of my trees. Many thanks in advance.

Hey Smithy,

No matter how HARD you try, you just can't keep away, can you? I'm walking a thin line though.
Being VERY careful at every step I take.

How've you been buddy?
