A potentilla i dug up from garden a few years ago. It was half dead and dug up in the middle of a hot summer so I'm pleased how it has come on. Looked good today in flower so i thought i would post a photo.

I love potentilla, and this one is really enchanting Neil.

(But I think I'd put it in a simpler pot if it were mine!)

Thanks John ,Sakaki and Russel.
I thought the pot went well with the trunk. I did have a more plain one to pot it into at first but went with this one. The plain one was wider and shallower.

Nice tree, but why haven't you wired the branches ? You can bend these into any shape you want.

It was cut back at the beginning of the year and let grow freely to flower now. I'm prefering to let things grow how they want to and clip and grow and let then have a more natural shape.

The thing is you say you can bend them into any shape you want'. That is the shape i want so really there is no need for wiring .
What are you suggesting ,style it more like a bonsai with pads.

I'm with you on that - and that is from one who would normally wire and style. Potentilla is one of the few trees that I have let just do their own thing and gone for the clip and grow method. They pop new growth out so freely that this is easy to do. I wont hijack Smithy's thread by posting mine here, but I will put a couple into my Gallery. They haven't flowered yet as we are still two or three weeks behind more southern parts of the UK up here.

No, I dont mean style it with pads. If you want a naturalistic style, you could wire the branches into some curves. I like the tree, There is just too many long straight branches IMO.

I would suggest you turn the tree regularly so the growth & flowers will face in all directions. In North America almost all potentillas have yellow flowers.

That's funny - where I live you can see them in yellow, white, pink, lavender, and orange. I think that the yellow is the form of the original wild type, which comes from China. The white and yellow are known to be more vigorous than the fancy colors.

Really nice work Smithy; I like it!

How well does the deadwood hold up on this species? Are you having to treat it any different from, for example, evergreen species?

Im not sure really and i'm sure there are others on the forum with older ones than this one. I think the dead near the soil surface will rot quick . This was quite rotten at the back when i got it. I was surprised when i went to clean this up lastnight how hard the dead wood was . I have been putting this on
