I think you may consider removing the moss from the trunk, both for esthetical reasons as for to prevent trunk rot.

The only thing I would remove is the spider net.

The moss needs to go also. It will eat an azalea's tender bark and leave him with a serious reverse taper at best, or a rotten trunk at worst.

Yes, i love moss but i will remove it late in automn to prevent trunk rot (i've heard of it but never seen on my Satsuki)

as said by henrik stubelius you remove the moss from the trunk, try to expose the roots if possible

Whats the size of the tree? I know you said mame, but still curious as to height.

Yep, a cracker! I too had problems with moss and trunks until I moved here ten years ago. The blackbirds keep all trunks in check now, what is left I remove each April May with my curved green brush.

That is such a beautiful little Kaho... I'm curious... does yours mutate blossoms beyond colorations? Mine goes from as few as 4 petals to as many as 6... I've even had it invert flowers once... but only on a single branchlet. It's very interesting and strange... so I was wondering if anyone else's did this....

'Kaho' flowers are very round because of the rounder petals as well as because of the 6 petals.

Five petals is the natural state of most rhododendron and azalea species. Some hybrids mutate to 6 or even 7 and 4. But 6 is much more common and I have never seen 4 myself.

'Hanatsuzuri' is a new cultivar that does many petals well. It goes up to 7.

Maybe one day we will have over 10 petals on azalea. But it does look odd.

Your English is fine. I do appreciate the international members on the list. I met a few people on the BCI China trip last fall and hope to meet a few more on the BCI Japan trip in November of this year. I think it one of the best things about these trips.
