Re: Variegated elephant bush
I have a couple of Lowes specials that I have been playing with. Looks like you have had this one for a couple of years. What is your ultimate design goal?

Doug: I like the trunk line and primary branch structure. My intent is to develop and refine foliage pads with time. I procured the tree recently as older, overgrown stock from a local greenhouse.

Lucky to get a bigger one of Portulacaria afra variegata prostrate form! They are slower growers than the normal ones.
This form lends itself well to be grown into semi-cascades, cascades or even into the weeping form.
Looking good so far.

Thanks, Lennard....good to hear from you. I will keep you posted as this one continues to develop. And yes, it felt good to locate the variegated cultivar.

Tom,
Love the tree.
I think it will be much more powerful in a smaller volume container.
Keep us posted.

Tom - I like the potential on this. We discussed crassula before, so I know you like succulents. I've got a few of these started this year. Did the nursery give you any indication of how old this was, or do you know how long it would have taken to get to this size (girth) in a pot? Cheers. Rick.

Nice, Dorothy.....that is pretty much what mine looked like prior to initial styling...I never cease to be amazed by the difference in climate zones....seems straightforward enough, but to see your plant having grown to that extent from a cutting in a relatively short time is pretty neat.
I suspect that mine was probably greenhouse grown here in WV for about 20 years or so before I got my hands on it.
Best regards,
Tom

Dear Dorothy
Lennard is right. Compared to the green variety of Portulacaria afra, the variegated variety is much much slower. In nature it mostly only forms a groundcover. You also get one with yellow foliage there by Garcia pass near Riversdale, Western Cape ...
Actually all variegated forms are slower than their green cousins.... less chlorophyll....but of course everyone knows that.
