I've grafted pinus densiflora to some branches here in 2010. After spending time studying the line of the trunk and branching, I think I'm going to go with this design (removing the stuff in the top left). It may be hard to see, but, there is a live surface root that extends to the right side of the pot. This will serve as a visual counterbalance to the hanging future red pine branch. The height of the trunk from the soil line to the top of the loop is 24 in. (60 cm.)

I like the trunk on this tree. Are you sure you want to remove the foliage at the top?

I think it's the way I'm going to go, if this new graft doesn't take. With this new image, you can see how the top branch juts out too far from the trunk to be of any real use.
