Wild thing - progress of a wild rose 003_2110

oh sorry, this is my wife. She is also a wild thing but the story i want to tell you ist how i diged out a wild rose in the mountains.

Ok here the secod wild thing :-) 2009 in June.
Wild thing - progress of a wild rose 004_2110

Wild roses you can dig out nearly every time if you cut her back hard. This rose had a hight about 2,5 meters before cuting.

As she was dug out i was not really happy. I had not really a vision for this tree. But maybe later.

About 3 weeks later the rose startet to grow again.

9 month later in March 2009.
The rose made some shoots last year. So ist was time to start the progress.
Wild thing - progress of a wild rose 031_1010

There were two ugly roots that i could not really use. I had to cut the lower fat root. So the rose must make new roots near and under the trunk.

Now i planted her in a flat trainingspot.

And back in the garden for one further year.

One year later in February 2011 she made new roots on the trunk and on the fat lower root. Roses can be repoted every year. This is not a problem.
Wild thing - progress of a wild rose 054_2010

She made not too many fine roots, but it was ok. So i could cut the fat upper root.

First bonsai pot.

The rest of the year she could grow again.

One year later, same procedure as every year. Repoting.
A lot of fine roots. I am satisfied.

2012 - working on the deadwood. The wild rose blooms in May 2012.

Spring 2013

Next year she will be repoted an gets a new pot and a new position so you can see also the living part of the rose.
In another 5 years it could be a good tree.

I hope you enjoyed

Nice progression in a short time. It's a pretty dynamic little tree, love the flowers and fruit.

This is only the second Rose composition I've ever seen, the other belonging to Arihato. It's just wonderful, and I cannot wait to see it in bloom. Fantastic

Hi Erbert,
what kind of soil (or mix) do you usually use for bonsai roses (both just after collecting and in bonsai pot, to get better ramification)?
And what's the best pruning period, in your opinion?

Thanks,

diego

Hallo Diego,

after collecting and also in the pot i use a soil mix 50:50 Akadama and pomice. This is my standardmix for all of my bonsai. (not for azaleas)

If you want a good ramification at wild roses, you have tu cut back in early spring each branch to two buds. Because wild roses dont make easily buds in old wood. They only want to grow on the top of the branch.

ciao

Hello Herbert – thank you for your post!

I have several rose species in bonsai cultivation – none ready for presentation here.  I hope you will keep us informed about your success with this rose.  Several years ago I moved into a very shady environment so much of my bonsai-species pallet has needed to adjust from sun-loving to forest understory.  In wandering about there are several local roses that keep “calling me”.  I will be very interested to watch your progress with this.  Thanks again!
