My first air layering

this is my very first attempt to air layering.



the big two are shishigashira acer
front is nioi maple.

Can you explain why use the tissue around the cut on the shishigashira airlayer?

I have done a few shishigashira airlayers. They have not all been good. I was advised by someone who was an apprentice at a well known bonsai nursery to let the cut stay in the open air for 1 day, then apply the moss.

The tissue is to stop Oxybelon dripping from the trunk.

Yes, indeed Neil! Mr. Watanabe Sinichi and Watanabe Keigi (father & son) have written an article titled "Advanced propagation techniques" published on some bonsai magazines describing exactly this method (of the Watanabe school). A fellow member here on IBC has talked to me about this through pm. Following the Watanabe method the circular cut is let to dry for one or two days, so that the sap circulating through the bark will not heal the scar, thus resulting in failure of the airlayer. The plant is kept protected from rain and night dew but also from sun during these days. Then the moss is applied.

The problem with 'bridging' the girdle arises because there are some residual cambium cells left after scraping the xylem. Simply swabbing with alcohol will kill them in seconds. There really is no need to wait for minutes, hours, or even days for this to happen by dessication. A bottle/package of sanitizing hand wipes is a good addition to the air-layering tool kit.

Probably I am the one who is the most surprised at this fast.

my husband does have some large bonsai. he used to keep many of them before changing his taste for shohin.

I would love to have a benreel. Never seen one for sale

You can buy something similar from warehouse supply stores like uline I think

My shishigashira layers are ok at this moment. Strange thing is that I did exactly same method to these brother/sister trees but they have the time gap their roots emerging.
Anyway I can hardly wait for separating in next year.
