Can Acer Japonicum " Emmett's Pumpkin" leaves be reduced?

I really love this cultivar and wanted one to grow out for my garden, but managed to get a deal on 2 nice low grafts each about 2 year grafts. One is destined to grow and eventually end up in my garden, just wondering how well if at all the leaves of this cultivar reduce, if anyone knows? I have seen it compared to the fullmoon maple, and even referred to as a variation of the fullmoon (not sure if that is correct) and I have seen some some really nice fullmoon maple's become nice bonsai.

A variation on full moon well that depends on your definition of variation. japonica and shirasawanum are both in the series Palmata so sure why not. If I'm wrong iris will let us know.

The "moons" I've seen as bonsai are almost always on the larger side (2-4 feet), I have seen smaller ones say a foot or so high, but they wind up being styled such that every individual leaf or a grouping of leaves kind of approximates a foliage pad if you get my drift..

I havent worked with them personally although I quest for a nicely grafted example. Problem I always run into with the 'moons' I've seen is not the quality of the graft itself, it's that the bark colors of understock and scion wind up not matching.

Curious to hear what others have to say about leaf reduction.

the high percentage of acer leaves do reduce in time - sometimes through getting a bit rootbound, or defoliating, or just by normal bonsai methods that increase the ramification so much that the tree holds plenty of twigs and buds. I think this one will need a tree of 24-30" though to look convincing so put them both in the garden, style them a bit and pot the best one as a bonsai

Yeah thats pretty much the plan for now, still a lot of growing to do before even considering it, just thought I would see if it had been done, thanks all and maybe in a few years we will see what happens
